Banff's larch season lasts barely two weeks in late September, when the needles of the region's larch trees turn a brilliant gold before dropping entirely. Time a road trip around it, and the Canadian Rockies put on one of the best displays in North America.
The Route
A loop from Banff townsite up the Icefields Parkway to Jasper and back, with detours to Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and the Larch Valley trail, covers the highlights over 4-5 days.
Larch Valley requires bear-group hiking
Parks Canada requires groups of four or more for the Larch Valley trail during peak season due to grizzly activity — join a group at the trailhead if needed.

- Larch Valley and Sentinel Pass, near Moraine Lake

Practical Notes
Snow is possible even in September at higher elevations, and some high-alpine trails may already be closing for the season — check trail reports the morning of any hike.
